Nona Marcus

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Nona Marcus. Born in 1931 in Washington, DC, she was an only child. Nona was strong, hard-working, fiercely independent, and completely herself. She was often described as having had an edge and always spoke her mind. Beneath that surface she was deeply loving, extremely loyal, and supportive of the people she cared about. Nona raised two children as a single working mother in the 1950s, building a life through hard work, determination, and grit. She moved to New Jersey as a young grandmother, but never lost her love for where she came from – always craving Maryland crabs and rooting for the Washington Redskins. She was extremely hard working and built a career as an office manager for multiple top doctors in the Tri-State area. She found happiness in Broadway shows and the Yankees (she never missed a game), played cards well into her late 80’s, and loved the beach. She was also a devoted QVC fan, and those who knew her best know it played a regular role in her daily routine. Let’s just say they’ll miss her too. Her memory will live on, especially through her legendary noodle and vegetable kugels, recipes that will continue to be shared, cooked, and loved for generations. Nona was preceded in death by her mother and father, Harry and Ann Schwartz, and her beloved son, Howard “Buddy” Banner. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Ilene and Phil Decter, her grandchildren, Ali and David Dorman, Stacey Decter, Cody and Stephanie Banner, Levi Banner, Talia Banner, and her great-grandchildren, Lindsay Dorman, Maggie Dorman, Kenzie Banner, and Aubrey Banner. A Celebration of Life will occur at a later date.
