Bettie Joe Holland

Bettie Joe Holland, born December 27, 1927, was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend whose warmth, wisdom, and unmistakable personality touched the lives of everyone who knew her. Bettie Joe was married to her loving husband, JC (James Charles Holland), and together they built a life filled with family, adventure, laughter, and love. She raised her family in Bridgeport, CT, after spending part of her early life on a farm in Danville, VA. Her journey would take her to New York before eventually bringing her back home to Danville, where she enjoyed her early retirement years. After retirement, Bettie Joe and JC embraced their love of adventure, traveling across the United States together in their RV for many years. They made memories along the way, always reminding those around them that there was a big world out there waiting to be explored. Bettie Joe found joy in the simple things. She loved going for joy rides, shopping in town, and most of all, spending time with her grandchildren. She loved to go fishing, clamming and crabbing, and especially loved to garden, taking pride in growing her own vegetables and then pickling them to share and enjoy. Her kitchen and garden were extensions of the love she poured into the people around her. And anyone who knew Bettie Joe knows she had an answer for just about everything. She firmly believed that chicken feet and ginger tea could cure any ailment—advice she was more than happy to share with anyone who needed it. Her wisdom, humor, and strong opinions will be remembered just as fondly as her love and kindness. Bettie Joe leaves behind her loving children: James Daniel (Wanda) Holland, Jennifer Carol Blanding, David Matthew (Vivian) Holland, Glenda Celeste (Willie) Groom, and Dwayne Michael (Grace) Holland. She was predeceased by her son, Kevin Darren (Michele) Holland and her grandson, Isaac R. Blanding. Bettie Joe leaves behind a legacy of family, resilience, adventure, and love. She taught those around her to appreciate the people beside them, enjoy the little things, and never wait too long to live life. Her greatest advice was simple: “Go while you can.” So, if you want to celebrate Bettie Joe’s memory, take her advice. Travel. Take the joy ride. Go shopping in town. Plant a garden. Pickle something. Spend time with your grandchildren. Make memories with the people you love. And most importantly, stick together. Bettie Joe may no longer be traveling the open road with JC, but the miles she traveled, the family she loved, and the memories she created will continue on in all of us. Sincerely, The Group
